Practicality of a Ducati 748/998 for communting?

a ducati would work for your commute, but does it really make sense to drop that kind of money on an Italian bike then commute on it? I would buy a cheaper (to purchase AND maintain) Japanese bike for commuting and use the Ducati for weekend joyriding/trackdays, if you simply must have a Duc.
